Empowering Ourselves in Mental Health Services

In this workshop we explore our experiences of diagnosis, medications and power in services. Using positive and negative continuums we ask people to rate their experience of being diagnosed. This is followed up by a discussion on a series of for and against quotes on the use of diagnosis. We consider the good and the bad stories that surround psychiatric medication and explore the costs and benefits of the medications we are on. We then discuss the meaning of power and the feelings and interactions that lead us to feeling either empowered or disempowered in services. This is followed by an exercise in which we consider ways we can empower ourselves in services.
