Finding Our Voices

We discuss our experiences of unfairness or injustice during this workshop and start by watching a rap video by poet Leah Harris on her experiences of injustice in mental health services. The group then discusses whether of not the video resonates with their own experiences. We talk about the consumer movement and the sense of injustice that generated it. This is followed by a video featuring Judi Chamberlin, a pioneer in the movement, who talks about self-determination and ‘nothing about us without us’. In pairs we compare our feelings in response to both loss of power and the freedom to make our own decisions. We then discuss our responses to some consumer movement slogans. The next part of the workshop explores the meaning and benefits of self-advocacy followed by an exercise where people consider how they would self-advocate in three different scenarios.

PURPOSE OF WORKSHOP

  • Our experiences of unfairness or injustice.
  • What others have done about unfairness or injustice.
  • What we can do about it.
